  • Just finished Crazy Rich Asians trilogy and all the Bridgerton books on audio and I absolutely loved them. They were great books to listen to while taking walks, cleaning, or driving!
  • Bridgerton. It’s a kind of fantasy, in its own way. Desperate Housewives for a fun, campy, soapy, neighborhood drama. Both are spicy and there are times that Bridgerton is nigh soft core (at least in the first season).

Bridgerton got way dumber to me when they tried to explain why nobody is racist anymore. They could have just had black actors and not commented on it, it could have been fine! But you needed to justify it halfway through the series? By the we’d all accepted it, and the explanation of the king ending racism for love was implausible and introduced unexplored complications around the colonial empire!

Bridgerton has many non-white characters, including a black queen, and removes the racial history of the period. But keeps the sex discrimination history of the period, mostly because the social expectations are romanticised or eroticised in the books. And the argument is that it's just supposed to be fun... It's just then it also tries to make points about racism or present certain characters as disadvantaged in a setting where racism apparently doesn't exist.
