As a former long time resident of Boston and the Boston area, there are lots of non-corporate feeling neighborhoods. There is also access to a whole buttload of nature.

I say boston due to history. Most major cities are walkable especially the older they are.
Seconding Boston. June is a perfect time of year to visit, and you'll maximize your time spent doing fun stuff if you don't have to travel too far between cities.
