You list Malaysia as somewhere you've been already, but have you been to Borneo? We went there for our last family holiday together with kids who were 17 and 19 (I think) - did things like white water rafting, scuba, jungle, wildlife (orang utans, sun bears, turtles, etc) as well as some beach time. Easy to get around (cheap internal flights, local busses etc) and really good fun.

Go to Borneo. You can fly into SIN, from there take a direct flight to Sandakan. Its amazing. Orangutans and lots of cultural. Return from KUL.

In Borneo - one of the coolest places I've been to was sepilok orangutan rehabilitation centre. I went twice, once before and once after a 3 day river/camping trip. That was also super interesting and you can go for as much or as little luxury as you want.
On peninsular Malaysia you have vibrant Kuala Lumpur, charming towns and beaches of Penang, cool-weathered Cameron Highlands tea culture and plantations, and you can see the Orangutans in Borneo.
The beaches in Borneo are beautiful (check out Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, short boat ride from Kota Kinabalu), and you will get a much nicer hotel for your money.
