Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Borderlands 3 is characterized by a sharp divide between its mechanical execution and its narrative quality. While the gunplay, movement, and build diversity are frequently praised as the best in the series, the story, humor, and pacing are widely criticized. Users often report that the game's excellent combat is hindered by unskippable dialogue and technical instability, particularly on the Nintendo Switch.

Pros

  • Excellent gunplay and movement feel, often compared to top-tier shooters like Destiny and Apex Legends.
  • Deep build variety and character customization that remains engaging at the endgame.
  • Solid co-op experience that does not rely on seasonal content or battle passes.
  • High volume of unique and 'wacky' legendary weapons.

Cons

  • Main narrative, villains, and humor are widely considered inferior to previous entries.
  • Frustrating pacing due to unskippable dialogue and being forced to wait for NPCs to finish talking.
  • Significant technical issues on Nintendo Switch, including frequent crashes and micro-stuttering.
  • Poorly designed menus and map navigation, especially for keyboard and mouse users.

Caveats

  • The high drop rate of legendary items can make non-legendary gear feel obsolete early on.
  • Map design is described as overly open and less focused than earlier titles.
  • Some users feel the game tries too hard to replicate the success of Borderlands 2 without its charm.

Best for

  • Players who prioritize mechanical combat and deep RPG build-crafting over story.
  • Co-op groups looking for a looter-shooter without live-service 'FOMO' elements.

Avoid if

  • You are playing on the original Nintendo Switch, where performance is reportedly poor.
  • You have a low tolerance for unskippable dialogue and 'cringe-worthy' humor.
  • You prefer the tighter map design and narrative focus of Borderlands 2.

The menu in most of their games are atrocious and never fixed. BL3's map is offensive on KB&M with how absolutely awful it is.

Even patched, it would hang for a half second or more super frequently.

Borderlands 3 crashes constantly on the Switch 1. Or at least it did for all the time I gave it my all.

Parent context: Honestly it's not even the narrative that's horrid, it's that you are forced to experience the dialogue for large large chunks where you're not able to do anything or skip/get back to the action. Reply: This is my issue, what's annoying is that this problem didn't even exist before, at least not in Borderlands 1. Everyone was just talking to you over radio while you did the thing you had to do, BL3 you're constantly waiting to get back into the action.

The legendary spam was the only reason I even stuck with the game. The constant supply of wacky and super fun guns is what kept me going through the ear-bleeding writing.
