Pros

  • And Big Sur isn’t a National park, but it should be! V. nice highway out there.
  • Big Sur was one of my favorite Kerouac books and I didn’t have intense personal experience with the subject matter when I read it. To me, it struck me as the most mature of his writing and most self-aware.
  • Read this a long time ago. Liked it but it was pretty dark and probably more honest about alcoholism than some readers are comfortable with.
  • Back trails of Big Sur with our Black Lab as a puppy.
  • The coast around Santa Barbara and big sur are also awesome

Cons

  • I've seen complaints that it felt rushed, haphazard in conduction, or without enough novelty of its own. Or that it's a "tired novel." And I get some of those criticisms. But it's probably my second fave of his novels.
  • I started reading *Big Sur* a year or two ago, and I didn't get past those first fifty pages. It just didn't click.
  • If near Monterey, Big Sur. Can get real crowded though.

we were thinking big sur as that's what we did last year but it doesn't seem to have gotten as much rain as last year and that's what made the trip so fun and pretty.
