AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro X receives a mixed reception from the community, often praised for its technical performance in gaming and orchestral music but criticized for its polarizing treble and specific comfort issues. While it is easier to drive than previous models, many users find it requires EQ to smooth out its frequency response and avoid a 'bland' or overly sharp sound.

Pros

  • Precise imaging and localization, making it effective for competitive gaming
  • High level of detail and clarity in the mid-to-high frequencies
  • Low impedance makes it easy to drive without a dedicated amplifier
  • Well-suited for orchestral music within its price range

Cons

  • Bright and potentially piercing highs that can be fatiguing
  • Small internal diameter of the ear pads can cause discomfort during long sessions
  • Frequency response is viewed by some as a downgrade compared to the original DT 990 Pro

Caveats

  • Often described as needing EQ to achieve a 'great' sound profile
  • Soundstage is noted as being narrower than competitors like the Sennheiser HD 560S

Best for

  • Competitive gaming where hearing footsteps and directional cues is a priority
  • Listeners who prefer a detailed, analytical sound for orchestral tracks
  • Users who want high-quality audio directly from a laptop or controller

Avoid if

  • You are sensitive to treble or 'bright' sound signatures
  • You have larger ears that might be irritated by the smaller pad openings
  • You prefer the specific tuning of the original non-X Beyerdynamic Pro series

I found these to be best for my ears. Over Sennheiser 560s and the DT 990 pro x.

The only X series independent evaluations I'm familiar with have been for the 48 ohm, DT 990 Pro X, and they're not good.

I heard the DT 990 Pro X have bright highs, which im not a fan of (i used DT 770 closed backs a couple years ago and hated the slam in my ears caused by the highs ).

otherwise, if you really want open backs, you got the DT 990 Pro X, HD 550, HD 560S/HD 400 Pro, HD 490 Pro, HD 6X0, FT1 Pro and Sundara's of the world... They will all feel bland (neutral) without EQ.

Reading around and various reviewers speak of much more precise imaging for the DT, while a slightly wider soundstage for the Sennheiser, but so overall the DT 990 Pro X wins?
