Belmond

Belmond is highly regarded in the luxury travel community for its unique, authentic properties that offer a strong "sense of place" and personalized service. It is frequently compared to other top-tier brands like Rosewood and Aman, with users particularly praising its ability to integrate into local surroundings and provide exclusive access to landmarks. While the brand is synonymous with high-end luxury, some guests find the addition of resort fees and service charges on top of premium nightly rates to be a significant drawback.
Pros
- Authentic and traditional atmosphere that reflects the local culture
- Personalized service with special touches and a high sense of place
- Strategic locations that offer better accessibility to local towns and landmarks compared to isolated resorts
- Excellent for comprehensive luxury tours, such as multi-city journeys through Peru
- One-of-a-kind properties that avoid a generic corporate feel
Cons
- High price point often supplemented by controversial 5% service charges or resort fees
- Limited on-site dining options at certain smaller properties
- Some locations are landlocked or have very small beach footprints
- Booking and administrative systems may feel less seamless than major global chains like Hilton
Caveats
- Property features vary significantly; some offer direct beach access while others are entirely landlocked
- Proximity to local attractions can sometimes mean being further away from main city thoroughfares
Best for
- Luxury travelers seeking character and authenticity over standardized resort experiences
- Travelers wanting early or exclusive access to major landmarks like Iguazu Falls
- Multi-stop luxury itineraries in regions like Peru
Avoid if
- You are sensitive to 'nickel and diming' through additional fees on high base rates
- You prefer large-scale resorts with a wide variety of on-site restaurant choices

I also was in Madiera in December and stayed at Savoy Palace and checked out Belmond. Love them both, just also depending on the vibes you want?
I can totally see Belmond or even Escencia.
Another great hotel in CP is the Belmond but the location is just not ideal, specially if you're traveling with a baby.
Belmond is stunning and if it’s within budget I’d spend a few nights there. Though it’s in the mountains it’s easy to do a boat charter out of Soller about 20 minutes away.
Overall, the Belmond experience is outstanding. Between the incredible guides, the seamless logistics, and the staff at each property, they took our preferences and created a flawless, customized itinerary.
I find their properties very old, stuffy, and in need of significant property upkeep and modernization.
I think generally they shine in their more unique offerings and sense of place in terms of design. They're the gold standard in Peru. Oftentimes, they're also the only true luxe option in a destination like Madeira, Portofino, and Iguazu (in the park).
I fine them very different from each other. Almost like there is no global structure or standards. Standards vary greatly and maintenance and upkeep in europe seems… scattered? I also find that there is no real link between price, service and overall experience.
They seem to have some wonderful properties around the globe, however, they do not seem to be talked about that much. Are their standards of service quality good and are their properties worth the premium price tag?
We did Peru and had a great time. Stayed at Belmond properties in Lima, Sacred Valley, and Cusco.
