I would *personally* preference nights in Belgrade and Sarajevo over Vienna or Budapest, but if you want lots of nightlife and things to do, then maybe more in Budapest is good, if you want high culture and shopping, maybe Vienna is good.
I think Belgrade is really awesome for a specific type of person. You sound like more of a Novi Sad type from how you describe Ljubljana and Zagreb, I recommend it for your next time.
In Serbia nowadays you can go to the most popular towns for tourists with a fast train. Those being Belgrade, Novi Sad and Subotica.
I would encourage you to visit Sarajevo, Belgrade and Albania (if you want a communist experience).
