Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Bath is highly regarded as a picturesque and charming city, frequently recommended as a distinct alternative to London for travelers seeking a different atmosphere. It is widely considered a top-tier destination for short city breaks, particularly for its architecture and accessibility.

Pros

  • Highly picturesque and described as 'gorgeous' and 'charming'
  • Easily accessible from London via train or bus for day trips
  • Offers a unique atmosphere that contrasts significantly with London
  • Excellent base for visiting nearby attractions like Stonehenge, Salisbury, and Longleat
  • Well-suited for solo travel and 1-2 day itineraries

Cons

  • Logistically stressful to combine with multiple other major sites (like Windsor and Stonehenge) in a single day

Caveats

  • Accommodations in nearby towns like Wells, Frome, or Shepton Mallet may offer better value for money for those with a car

Best for

  • Day trips from London
  • Solo travelers
  • Short city breaks (1-2 days)
  • Fans of historic architecture and landmarks like Bath Abbey

Avoid if

  • You are attempting to cram too many distant UK landmarks into a single day's itinerary

Bristol and Bath offer a pretty diverse mix of things, Bath being a personal favourite place of mine, can also hop over to Salisbury/ Stonehenge or Longleat..

Bath: around 1h15-1h30 direct from Paddington. A lovely city in Somerset you have the Roman baths, abbey, royal crescent, Jane Austen Centre, the river, Mary Shelby’s House of Frankenstein museum

For the UK route: Bath is gorgeous and totally doable as a day trip from London.

If you want a nice day trip I highly recommend Norwich (castle, cathedral, cute ass Paddington statue) and/or the English beachside towns of Cromer/Sheringham(best fish and chips Ive had and local vibe). Both of these are simple train ride away with minimal connections so there's no need to get a car or anything.

We just came back from a week in London - and spent an entire day in Bath. Everyone said it was the highlight of the trip. I myself thought it was gorgeous, and the restaurants divine.

Bath is probably the most different from London in terms of atmosphere.

Yeah I was thinking that - somewhere like Bath or Cambridge, a city that is picturesque (as I prefer the idea of city breaks if I do solo travel) and see how I feel.

Windsor is also a good train ride away from the city but very doable, but it would be a lot of stressing and running around to see Bath, Windsor and Stonehenge all in one day.

The countryside was definitely my favorite—little villages, rolling hills, castles, old churches and coastal towns. Everything was just so dreamy! ... #10,11,12 : Bath
