AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Basel is a polarizing destination among travelers, often viewed as a functional transit hub or a niche cultural center rather than a primary Swiss highlight. While it is praised for its world-class museums, architecture, and zoo, many visitors find it expensive and less exciting than Switzerland's alpine regions.

Pros

  • Highly regarded museums, including special events like Museum Night.
  • Proximity to the Vitra Design Museum for architecture enthusiasts.
  • Unique summer activities such as floating down the Rhine river.
  • Features a notable zoo often compared to other major European city zoos.

Cons

  • High cost of visiting and general expenses.
  • Perceived as 'boring' by some travelers compared to more scenic Swiss locations.
  • Prone to rainy and gloomy weather, particularly during October and November.
  • Often relegated to a transit stop rather than a standalone destination.

Caveats

  • Travelers frequently note that Basel does not offer the iconic mountain scenery found in other parts of Switzerland.
  • Weather conditions in late autumn are described as having very limited sunshine.

Best for

  • Museum and art lovers.
  • Architecture and design enthusiasts.
  • Families interested in high-quality zoos.
  • Summer travelers who enjoy urban river activities.

Avoid if

  • You are primarily seeking dramatic Swiss mountain landscapes.
  • You are traveling on a strict budget.
  • You want to avoid frequent rain and overcast skies.

I thought Basel was boring, but it had cheap airfare. Overall, very expensive. Not sure I'd return.

Paris, London, Basel, Berlin Amsterdam have similar weather in those periods on average between 0-10 degrees with one in five days with sun and 1 in 4 days with rain.

Started in Zurich, then went to Engelberg, Mt Titlis, Lucerne, Basel and back to Zurich. I got lucky planning it since we ended up being in Basel for their Museum night. They open up their museums at night and it was just awesome walking through it all.

The Basel night is fine as a transit stop, but it’s more of a convenience than a highlight.

Like others have asked, why these locations? The best parts of Croatia/Slovenia/Switzerland are not going to be Zagreb/Ljubljana/Basel, and 2 days in Munich isn’t going to allow to you see much of Bavaria.

Love to see Basel on your list. Visited a few years back and it was such an unexpectedly enjoyable place. Going in summer will mean you can make use of floating along the river through the city - still regret not doing it. Basel is right next to the Vitra Design Museum if you’re into architecture and design, which was main reason we visited the city.
