If you have money, driving from Banff to jasper is pretty incredible.
I was in Banff/Jasper in June once and there was still plenty of snow and mud on the hiking trails. September is probably the best month.
Definitely add Jasper to Banff, Jasper is great and the drive between them is amazing.
For Banff, there’s a lot of hotels in the park, so if you can afford it, you can stay in the park. If you can’t, then look at Canmore.
Mountains are more accessible in Banff, though you can do day trips into the Iceland interior. Plus points: did get to see lots of puffins up close and didn’t need to worry about bears whilst hiking!
Given your vacation will be in August I'd start booking accommodations ASAP, especially Tofino, Whistler, Banff and Jasper.
