Pros
- If you want to be able to play aaaaand record you need a Yamaha, Kawaii, Baldwin or one of the premium brands like Steinway etc
- In our bedroom nook I have my childhood Baldwin, which I painted to match.
- Try some of the eastern European brands & older Baldwin's (I have a soft spot for them).
- Baldwin or Emtek are great options
- I own a 5’8” Baldwin from the late 1990’s I like a lot, that was a bargain compared to the used Steinways from that age.
Cons
- They did have a Yamaha C3 from 1981 that I quite enjoyed, but I found it difficult to be able to say that it was certainly better than all the others I tried (a few Kawais, a Baldwin, a Yamaha G3).

However, their soundboards were laminated (plywood), meaning they’d never mature into a gorgeous tone like Steinways, Baldwin, Mason & Hamlins would.
For reference, I bought a used Baldwin for around 5k that sounds great.
I have an early 80s Baldwin and it's an all around lovely piano.
You can get performance quality instruments for a lot cheaper than you think. Look into Baldwin and Mason&Hamlin.
