I've used Avignon as a home base for trips to Pont du Gard, Uzes, Arles, Saint Remy de Provence, L'Isle Sur la Sorgue, Nimes, Aix en Provence and Marseille. Those would all be 90 minutes max in each direction, and most are under an hour.
Avignon and Nice both make great bases to explore the south coast of France. One week in each
Avignon was home to the popes and has a medieval papal palace with lots of Gothic art.
Carcassonne, Montpellier, Avignon, Aix are worth visit
For a genuine sense of the south of France, Avignon is your best option if you can travel a little further. Have fun :)
Of course Provence is gorgeous and easy to get to from Paris. A train to Avignon or Aix en Provence and then a rental car to get around to towns like Gordes, Lourmarin, Arles, Nimes, etc.
Arles is nice but personally I prefer Avignon.
Can you keep the rental car for a while longer? A little over 3 hours and you’re in Carcassonne. 4.5 to Avignon, 5.5 hours to Cassis. Nimes, Arles, etc are all close by and easy to drive to and in.
We were in the south of France last August and hit several of the towns on the Mediterranean. I did not like any of them as much as I like Aix, Avignon or Nimes. To be fair, it was August and I am pretty sure 50% of France was at the beach AND I am not a beachy person. But the cities and small towns we loved.
I personally preferred Avignon.
