AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Avignon is highly recommended as a strategic and historical home base for travelers exploring the Provence region. It is praised for its central location, which allows for easy day trips to surrounding cities, and its rich medieval history, most notably the Palais des Papes.

Pros

  • Excellent central hub for day trips to Arles, Nimes, Aix-en-Provence, and Saint Remy.
  • Rich historical and cultural significance, including Gothic art and the medieval papal palace.
  • Highly accessible from Paris via train.
  • Often preferred over nearby Arles or crowded Mediterranean beach towns for a genuine South of France feel.

Cons

  • No specific negative experiences were reported in the analyzed mentions.

Caveats

  • While the city is accessible by train, a rental car is recommended to reach smaller scenic towns like Gordes and Lourmarin.
  • Travelers who strictly prefer beach environments may find inland cities like Avignon less appealing than coastal destinations.

Best for

  • Travelers seeking a central base for exploring Provence.
  • History enthusiasts interested in medieval architecture and Gothic art.
  • Those arriving in the south of France via train from Paris.

Avoid if

  • You are looking for a beach-centric vacation.
  • You prefer to avoid driving, as many nearby highlights are best reached by car.

I've used Avignon as a home base for trips to Pont du Gard, Uzes, Arles, Saint Remy de Provence, L'Isle Sur la Sorgue, Nimes, Aix en Provence and Marseille. Those would all be 90 minutes max in each direction, and most are under an hour.

Avignon and Nice both make great bases to explore the south coast of France. One week in each

Of course Provence is gorgeous and easy to get to from Paris. A train to Avignon or Aix en Provence and then a rental car to get around to towns like Gordes, Lourmarin, Arles, Nimes, etc.

Arles is nice but personally I prefer Avignon.

Can you keep the rental car for a while longer? A little over 3 hours and you’re in Carcassonne. 4.5 to Avignon, 5.5 hours to Cassis. Nimes, Arles, etc are all close by and easy to drive to and in.

We were in the south of France last August and hit several of the towns on the Mediterranean. I did not like any of them as much as I like Aix, Avignon or Nimes. To be fair, it was August and I am pretty sure 50% of France was at the beach AND I am not a beachy person. But the cities and small towns we loved.
