Lots of people travel there all the time including long term backpacking and seasonal working etc. You want to travel somewhere right, why in particular do you think Australia is a bad choice? It’s great weather to go hang out near the beach and travel around now.
So i would do that followed by a trip to Australia considering that it is a big ass continent which would need flights to experience comfortably.
You could look at a lot of Australia in their winter/ our summer. We've gone there often in July just because that's when our kids had summer break (we live in the US and have relatives in Australia) and it's generally in the 40-60F range. It's a big country so you can definitely find the less-touristy parts.
