AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Audeze is a prominent planar magnetic headphone brand frequently praised for industry-leading bass punch and robust, "tank-like" build quality. While highly regarded for genres like metal and electronic music, the brand is equally known for the significant physical weight of its products, which many users find uncomfortable for long sessions. Opinion is divided on reliability; while some users report excellent longevity and warranty service, others cite a history of driver issues and "dark" stock tuning that often requires EQ to reach its full potential.

Pros

  • Exceptional bass quality and impact, particularly for planar magnetic drivers
  • Extremely durable, heavy-duty build quality
  • Excellent performance for metal, hip-hop, and electronic music
  • User-serviceable design in some models, featuring standard screws for easy maintenance
  • Strong reputation for studio and professional monitoring use

Cons

  • Significant physical weight often leads to discomfort during extended use
  • Stock sound signatures can be overly "dark" or recessed without EQ
  • Mixed reports on quality control, including driver crinkle or channel imbalance
  • Some models use glued ear pads, making replacement more difficult

Caveats

  • Many enthusiasts consider the use of EQ (Equalization) mandatory to correct the stock frequency response
  • While often compared favorably to HiFiMan regarding build, some users still consider their quality control history to be inconsistent

Best for

  • Bass enthusiasts seeking punch and detail
  • Listeners of metal and electronic music
  • Studio professionals needing a reliable monitoring tool
  • Users who prioritize a rugged, durable build over lightweight comfort

Avoid if

  • You are sensitive to headphone weight or neck strain
  • You prefer a lightweight, "disappearing" fit for multi-hour sessions
  • You want a perfectly neutral or bright sound signature out of the box without using EQ

There are no other open or closed back headphones that are more neutral than these. HD800s are worse for example just like the entire Hifiman and Audeze range.

Hmm would be interesting to see more test on other audiophile brands like Audeze, Hifiman, DCA, and so on.

Even outside of the bass, I don't think I could make a DCA sound as dynamic as an Audeze, a Focal, or a ZMF

When I contacted Audeze regarding a problem with my Maxwells, they employed a hitman to murder my father.

Audeze's come to mind as following that trend.

This is why I have negative bias towards HiFiMan, Audeze with glued pads and Focal with basically no easy access to replacement parts here.
