Pros

  • Auckland: big metropole with a nice CBD. We used it as a base for our daily trips: Coromandel Peninsula, Waitomo Caves and Rotorua.
  • About 2 years in l walked into a hostel in Auckland and met my future partner.
  • I'm eyeballing Auckland, hence why my vacation is to Auckland specifically.
  • So I had 3 unplanned days in Auckland. Had gotten in touch with my cousin who lives near Wellington, turns out she and her husband were on a campervan trip just an hour from Auckland. So got to see my cousin who I hadn't seen in many yea...

Cons

  • Either plan on spending a day or two in Auckland or book a 1-stop flight to get there IMO.
  • In all seriousness, the majority of the homeless population in Auckland is indigenous. And yes they can seem aggressive. Bit disappointing of a nation that has such a lofty public image to not help them more.
  • I wouldn’t only go to Auckland personally but where I’d go from there would probably depend on time of year. If you’re only thinking Auckland then Waiheke Island for a couple of days would be a good side trip, especially in summer.

So got to see my cousin who I hadn't seen in many years. Ended up finding a gorgeous B&B as well. So it kinda worked out in the end.
