Wife and I did 14 days in Greece on a guided tour (was our 2nd intl trip) about 15 years ago and it was amazing - athens, mykanos, santarini - and exhausting. Would do it again before we went back to hawaii
Athens is better (because Greeks leave the city in August lol), but some of the more popular islands are super crowded instead.
I have no idea why Athens would be risky at all, but it is not.

I did Santorini, Paris, and Athens without a car. I used the public transport or taxis. I walked a lot too. Stay somewhere central to what you want to see in Athens to make walking possible.

Go to Athens at dawn and watch all the locals set out bowls of food for the >50,000 stray cats (number is not made up, thats an actual estimate). Stray animals can be loved too. And the street cats are mostly very friendly 🥰
And since you love history like you said, you’d have places like the Parthenon and the Ancient Agora of Athens right in the middle of the city, so it really scratches that “walking through history” feeling (kind of like Rome).
You could stay around Monastiraki, which is a really lively area with cute streets, markets, rooftop bars, and amazing views of the Acropolis of Athens. From there it’s super easy to wander into Plaka and Anafiotika, which are some of the prettiest little areas in the city. It’s perfect if you like just walking around old neighborhoods and stumbling into cafes and ruins.
