ASUS ROG Kithara

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The ASUS ROG Kithara is a collaborative open-back planar magnetic headphone developed with HiFiMAN, designed to bridge the gap between high-end audiophile performance and competitive gaming. It is widely praised for its exceptional imaging and positional accuracy, which many users describe as superior to traditional gaming headsets and even some higher-priced audiophile models. While the build quality is noted as a significant step up from standard HiFiMAN offerings, the sound signature remains polarizing due to a prominent treble peak and limited sub-bass extension.
Pros
- Exceptional imaging and directional accuracy, often described as 'cheat mode' for gaming
- Significantly improved build quality compared to standard HiFiMAN models, featuring more metal construction
- Comfortable ear cup design that reduces jaw pressure compared to older 'egg-shaped' models
- High value for the price, especially considering the included USB DAC and microphone
- Engaging midrange that makes footsteps and vocal cues easy to discern
Cons
- Sharp 8kHz treble peak can lead to sibilance and fatigue for sensitive listeners
- Poorly padded headband strap that some users find uncomfortable or 'cheap' feeling
- Microphone design is cumbersome, requiring unplugging to get it out of the way
- Limited sub-bass extension and a generally bright sound profile
- Reports of quality control issues, including headband defects and driver crackling
Caveats
- The included frequency response measurement cards should be viewed with skepticism as they may not perfectly reflect the unit's performance
- While it feels light on the head, it is still a relatively hefty 400g unit
- Value proposition is lower for those who already own a high-quality standalone microphone and similar headphones like the HiFiMAN Edition XS
Best for
- Competitive gamers who prioritize positional audio and soundstage
- Audiophiles looking for HiFiMAN-style performance with more robust build quality
- Users seeking a high-end, all-in-one open-back gaming solution
Avoid if
- You are highly sensitive to treble peaks or sibilance
- You require a retractable or flip-to-mute microphone for convenience
- You prefer a warm sound signature with heavy sub-bass impact

The kithara is actually pretty well positioned, price-wise.
It's very recent and the Arya Stealth likely outclasses the Kithara on technicalities almost everywhere.
What a nasty treble peak. And right in the sibilance range, too.
I have a set of ROG Kithara on pre-order with Amazon, but I thought I’d check if anywhere else in Europe has them in stock.
Asus Kithara: Surprised to have this on the list given Asus’ rep. Awesome except the mic doesn’t get out of the way without unplugging. Maybe just these and a cable with and without the mic to hand, swap over?
At 300€ vs ~180€ of the Edition XS I don't see there being much reason to get the Kithara if you already have an independent microphone.
I returned mine. It actually sounds like shit. And it was hard to get out of the box.
Low bass extension, flat midrange, 8khz peak. $359
I’m leaning more towards the Kithara if I do get a new pair, as I’ll be honest, I love the way they look
the ROG Kithara is technically a headset, but collaborated between Asus ROG and Hifiman, it is build as an audiophile headphone, just with a built in mic. It’s $299.
