Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Assassin's Creed Shadows receives a mixed but generally positive reception, praised for its technical visual fidelity and sound design while facing criticism for its open-world structure and animation quality. While many users find the recreation of Japan impressive—particularly on high-end hardware and through a surprisingly capable Switch 2 port—others describe the experience as "soulless" when compared to competitors like Ghost of Yotei. The game is noted for its strong sales and review scores, yet it continues to struggle with the "Ubisoft formula" of waypoint-heavy navigation and occasional technical jank.

Pros

  • High-end visuals and lighting, especially when utilizing ray-tracing features
  • Excellent sound design, particularly environmental effects like wind
  • Well-optimized port for the Switch 2 despite low native resolution
  • Improved collectible system compared to previous entries in the franchise
  • Strong technical performance and enhancements on the PS5 Pro

Cons

  • Frequent reports of 'janky' animations and technical bugs
  • Open-world design relies heavily on map markers and waypoints rather than organic discovery
  • Perceived lack of 'soul' or unique identity compared to similar titles like Ghost of Yotei
  • Handheld performance requires significant resolution trade-offs (648p) to maintain frame rates

Caveats

  • Public perception is heavily influenced by comparisons to the Ghost of Tsushima/Yotei series, which many users find more immersive
  • Franchise fatigue from previous entries impacted initial interest for some players
  • Technical impressions vary significantly between platforms, from high-end RT on consoles to heavily optimized mobile ports

Best for

  • Long-time fans of the Assassin's Creed franchise
  • Players looking for a visually stunning recreation of historical Japan
  • Switch 2 owners wanting a large-scale AAA open-world title

Avoid if

  • You prefer organic exploration without constant map markers
  • You are sensitive to animation glitches and 'Ubisoft-style' jank
  • You are looking for a significant departure from the established AC gameplay loop

The sound design and look of the windy forest is top notch.

I found the open world, visuals, the wind system and side activities so interesting and unique, miles above the likes of an “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows” , for example.

Latest game in the franchise that's based in Japan. Reviewed quite well, and is getting a lot of support.

Screaming “optimise games better” when stuff like outlaws and assassin’s creed shadows understandably get incredibly cutdown which I think you might be able to call optimised in some ways in order to achieve a 30 FPS experience.

AC: shadows - - - came out at the same time as GoY. Both games are essentially the same thing, but GoY is just much better in almost every respect.

I still don’t understand how digital foundry chose AC shadows and doom over DS2 for best graphics. Even with the advanced RT tech in shadows the pure fidelity, image quality, textures, cutscenes, faces, animations is LEAGUES above shadows.

Looks and plays great and I'm sure it will run and look better with the huge patch on the 15th.
