Pros

  • Unlike most games, and what I’m sure was a technical marvel back in 2007, you actually have an incredibly fluid platforming system that allows you to run and climb almost every surface, to a pretty generous degree.
  • If they are familiar with the video game Assassin’s Creed I highly recommend a themed tour
  • The high points of Assassins Creed and Far Cry have been really good games with actual communication of ideas etc. There is a genuine commitment to storytelling and dramatic narrative, basically enough art to consider them better than ju...

Cons

  • Ubisoft's approach to copy-paste busywork is an anathema to good (open world) game design, and seeing them struggle to keep afloat is so gratifying after they destroyed both the Assassin's Creed and Far Cry franchises
  • Allister, a pedantic history nerd who gives me Assassin's Creed Shaun Hastings vibes.
  • I was a big fan of Assassin's Creed back when I was younger, but not so much now that I'm older. I personally feel that you have to be actually interested in the historical timepiece presented to get the full enjoyment out of the game.
  • The problems start when the system starts demanding precision along with speed. I can’t tell you how many times I got genuinely tilted over watching Altair fruitlessly cling to a wall or perch because I tried to take a turn too quickly w...
  • Apart from the high and low extremes I felt with the parkour system the rest of the gameplay is solid but shallow. A small variety of side content that is fine to dabble in but not worth diving deep, a combat system with nuance but an en...

The problems start when the system starts demanding precision along with speed. I can’t tell you how many times I got genuinely tilted over watching Altair fruitlessly cling to a wall or perch because I tried to take a turn too quickly while sprinting, or mistiming a leap and plummeting two or three stories in the middle of a chase.

Apart from the high and low extremes I felt with the parkour system the rest of the gameplay is solid but shallow. A small variety of side content that is fine to dabble in but not worth diving deep, a combat system with nuance but an entirely overpowered counter move, and stealth that is fun and immersive but lacks the necessary level of feedback to be on par with the greats I’ve played elsewhere.

But there’s always time for another post about how Horizon is overrated or Assassins Creed is too big.

I have a lot of issues with the series, and how Ubisoft manage the series, but the reason why I kept thinking about the older games is because they have an addicting and grounded parkour movement in a dense urban cities

The fatal issue that makes the Assassin’s Creed games unplayable is the sci-fi element. It could have been a great series if they just never included any of that and just made them actually set in the past.
