At least in Asia it will be cheaper to stay in guesthouses and hotels rather than resorts and boutique hotels.

Most places are not as dangerous as you think. Certainly that's been the case for me in Asia.
20 hours flight, 12 hours time change, for a 10 day trip this is not worth it . Asia is an exceptional place to visit but you really need more time than that to enjoy it .
