also, IMO, arashiyama is the most overrated thing in Japan. it's out of the way and it's just an admittedly nice public park, but absolutely full of Chinese tourists with selfie sticks and iPads. nothing special.

Honestly the forest was mid, but the main street was very fun with snacks, albeit crowded, in early June, which is when I was there a few years ago.
You can come very early and time it right to get a quick, mostly-empty picture, but yeah, the crowds are now basically permanent. Still not worth going there IMO.
Popular Kyoto sites (Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, Arashiyama) get extremely crowded by midday, to the point that imo they're unenjoyable.
