We stayed in Ao Nang for a few days as a base to explore the surrounding areas.
Choose Ao Nang if you want shops, nightlife, crowds, restaurants, better hotels. You can always take a longboat and be in Railay in less than 10 minutes. We literally never waited more than 5 minutes to board one.
Ultimately, we chose to stay in Ao Nang for the convenience. It proved to be the right choice for us: Ao Nang is not nearly as pretty as Railay, but it is very convenient, and there's a lot more choice for basically everything (massages, tours, restaurants, shops).

Personally I'd go a week or so in Luang Prabang, a few days in Ao Nang and a few on Phi Phi.
Krabi is good for kayaking but not snorkelling... There is no reef at Ao Nang, Tonsai has been mud for decades and Railay is completely dead underwater. BUT The day trips to outer islands are still worthwhile. Ao Nang has the best shopping / nightlife strip out of these beaches.
I stayed in the Ao Nang area and loved it. I went kayaking in a mangrove, rock climbing on Railay, day tripping around the Phi Phi islands, and swimming with bioluminescent plankton. There was tons more I didn't get a chance to book, too.
I much preferred Ao Nang, Railay beach and the 3 southern islands Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao.
