In Belgium, Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges are highlights to just walk through. They are gorgeous cities and the absolute best Belgium has to offer.
The transport system is so good around there that you can just play it by ear. ... or even down to Belgium (Antwerp is easy to get to, for instance).
I visited Ghent and Bruges in one day coming from Antwerp, and each are definitely worth more time. Brussels I got bored with after a couple hours and went back to Antwerp which I thought was a far nicer city.
Personally I really like Antwerp and used it as my base for Belgium last fall, but it’s easily visited from Ghent for a day trip and I think I’d likely stay in Ghent on a future visit based on the vibe.
Went back a couple decades later and spent several days and loved it. Wonderful town to explore. Surprisingly, all four adults on that trip really enjoyed the Antwerp Zoo. We don’t even care for our local, internationally recognized zoo, but we’re surprised to find Antwerp’s was charming and entertaining. Very good food in the historic district, and if a fair happens to be occurring by the water, that was fun to walk around, too.
The first time I went to Antwerp, I was terribly underwhelmed. But that was an afternoon snatched on a train trip.
