Pros

  • Anora, despite also being directed by non-speaker like EP, completely nails the language component. Whiny Moscow accents for the oligarchs, thick Armenian Russian accents for the goons, and Madison's super cringy bad pronunciation as a n...
  • Anora is definitely the best one from 2024. Has the best cast of characters ever, it's one of the rare funny comedies I've ever seen and has a beautifully intimate and emotional ending that I think way too many people are missing the poi...
  • Anora is intentionally underwritten to allow the actor to make up for it
  • Having watched both I thought Mikey's performance in Anora was much better than Demi's.
  • Anora had the boobs and The Substance had the butts. Both ended up being great films lol

Cons

  • Parent context: I said this in another post, but the whole "searching for him" part in the 2nd act just dragged on, and seemed superfluous, both as a whole, and the individual scenes. I think more of a montage pacing would have served th...
  • I would’ve give it best picture at the last Oscars. Over both Anora and The Brutalist.
  • Plus, she's just as funny in the comedic sequences as Mikey was in Anora so imo it's a better overall performance.
  • I don’t think Anora is best picture but Mikey definitely was best actress. And maybe a couple of the best scenes of the year. I think with a bit of editing Anora would be a perfect film. But as it stands there are weak sections of the se...
  • Honestly in shock the Anora won nothing.

Anora, despite also being directed by non-speaker like EP, completely nails the language component. Whiny Moscow accents for the oligarchs, thick Armenian Russian accents for the goons, and Madison's super cringy bad pronunciation as a non-native speaker just starting to learn the language. From a linguistic standpoint it's flawless

Parent context: I said this in another post, but the whole "searching for him" part in the 2nd act just dragged on, and seemed superfluous, both as a whole, and the individual scenes. I think more of a montage pacing would have served the film better. Reply: Opinions are funny like that because I thought the 2nd act made the movie, and that any dragging on happened in the final third so…

Anora is definitely the best one from 2024. Has the best cast of characters ever, it's one of the rare funny comedies I've ever seen and has a beautifully intimate and emotional ending that I think way too many people are missing the point. It's just a fun ride the whole time and it's one of the most empathetic depictions of a sex worker in film that also isn't afraid to be absurd and messy.

I don’t think Anora is best picture but Mikey definitely was best actress. And maybe a couple of the best scenes of the year. I think with a bit of editing Anora would be a perfect film. But as it stands there are weak sections of the second act.
