Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Annecy is frequently described as a magical and beautiful destination in the French Alps, highly regarded for its lake, mountain views, and relaxed atmosphere. While many travelers find it a refreshing alternative to more commercialized tourist hubs, opinions are mixed regarding the ideal length of stay and the impact of seasonal weather.

Pros

  • Stunning natural scenery featuring lakes and Alpine views
  • Relaxed, local energy compared to major tourist theme parks
  • Highly walkable with flat, flower-lined paths and plenty of seating
  • Excellent for a slow-paced, 'magical' travel experience

Cons

  • Can feel 'grim' or less impressive during winter months compared to summer photos
  • Limited activities for some travelers, leading to high costs for little to do
  • Weather-dependent; the experience is significantly diminished by rain

Caveats

  • Several users suggest that one full day is sufficient to see the main sights
  • Day trips from nearby Lyon are common but require an early start and a long day
  • Visiting in February or off-season may result in a less-than-ideal experience

Best for

  • Relaxed travelers seeking a walkable, scenic destination
  • Those looking for an authentic local feel away from souvenir-heavy areas
  • A short 1-2 day stopover during a larger European rail trip

Avoid if

  • You are traveling during the winter and expect the vibrant colors seen in summer photography
  • You prefer high-activity destinations with numerous attractions
  • You have a very tight schedule that doesn't allow for a full day trip

Go to Annecy if you want to see Annecy (and if you have time), though obviously it is going to be a bit grim then compared to photos taken in summer.

I would encourage you to either go to Lyon/Annecy with the Burgundy days, or to the Mediterranean coast (you can do quite a bit and everything is well connected by train) or even to Normandy.

Annecy is beautiful and worth a visit, but I think one full day is plenty.

Maybe just train slowly up from Italy to southern France (Annecy) to Parisian countryside and castles (chenonceau, Chambordt, Versailles, Rouen) on your way to Normandy and eventually Ireland.

Lyon with a day trip to Annecy works, though that day will be fairly full. Annecy is doable but expect an early start and a long day.

It's a nice enough place but certainly not at its best in February.. you might be lucky with the weather,or not! Not great if it's raining.

in which case you're not getting much from Chamoix, Anecy or Hallstadt, Zermatt other than staying in expensive places with little to do.
