Ananda
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Ananda is a highly-regarded planar magnetic headphone praised for its technical capabilities, particularly its expansive soundstage and precise imaging. It is frequently recommended as a significant technical step up from entry-level models like the Sundara or HE400se, though it is often compared closely with the Edition XS. Its sound signature leans neutral-bright, providing excellent detail and instrument separation, though this can result in recessed mids and fatiguing highs for some listeners. While generally considered comfortable for large ears, the physical build is sometimes described as creaky or rickety.
Pros
- Expansive soundstage with notable height and width
- Precise imaging and instrument placement, making it highly effective for competitive gaming
- High level of detail and transparency in the treble
- Generally comfortable for long sessions, especially for those with sensitive or large ears
- Relatively easy to drive without requiring high-end amplification
Cons
- Recessed or distant-sounding mid-range
- Treble can be sharp, metallic, or fatiguing for sensitive listeners
- Build quality can feel rickety or prone to creaking during movement
- Noticeable bass roll-off on certain versions unless corrected with EQ
Caveats
- Opinions are mixed on whether it represents a linear upgrade or a side-grade compared to the Edition XS
- Sound characteristics vary between versions (V1, Stealth, Nano), particularly regarding treble smoothness and bass linearity
- While easy to drive, it may still lack headroom when used with very low-power mobile dongles
Best for
- Competitive FPS gaming where directional audio is critical
- Listeners who prefer a neutral-bright sound signature with high detail
- Users looking for a large, 'out-of-head' soundstage experience
Avoid if
- You are sensitive to bright or piercing high frequencies
- You prefer a warm, dark, or mid-forward vocal presentation
- You require a rugged, silent build for mobile use

Having listened to both quite a bit to figure out which I wanted to keep, the Ananda is definitely the better headphone. It wasn't night and day, but it was better. Also quite a bit more comfortable than the XS.
if you want a bit more treble so that high notes in guitars and high gets get more emphasized, a hifiman edition xs, ananda, arya would be good. Also provides good soundstage, instrument separation
the upper treble in Ananda is much sharper, highlights stuff like toms, high hats
The sundara is good, but not so accurate as the ananda, probably better for people who likes warmer sound and dark sound but still a little bright
And with the ananda stealth v3, i feel like mids are way too far away, treble is fatiguing but not so close or easly revealed like my sennheiser HD25 80th anniversary edition ruby red (fun fact is 1 of 80 in the world and you cannot buy it anywhere, well just flexing, it sounds like any other HD25)
The imaging of the ananda is waaaaaay better, playing fortnite, pubg and many other shooters, the footsteps are just there, very clear, and in the HE400se the ambient sounds are not so isolated and defined, are more "blended" and i cannot tell where the sounds are coming from so well
I actually kinda like neutral-bright-ish sounding headphones (I own the Ananda, K702 and DT880).
We give you two months before you are tempted to try the ananda or edition xs after you find some flaws with the he400se
I would suggest Ananda or Arya with fiio k11. I don't think you need fiio k9. I have not tried Arya, but I enjoyed my uncle's Ananda and he gifted me Ananda nano.
Ananda is not hard to drive so you can use whatever.
