The first of the Murderbot Diaries, All Systems Red. I don’t usually like short fiction as I like to see a long story development and world building, but LOVED this mostly novella series.
Murderbot’s main character is non-binary and the evil corporate overlords (the main baddies) are easy to dislike. All Systens Red is the first novella.

For a quick mostly lighthearted one, try All Systems Red, by Martha Wells This is an absolute must read of sci-fi and don't be put off by the number of books in the series, the first one can be read as a stand alone.
All systems red is the first, and do a google to read them chronologically as that is different from the publishing order.
