AKG K712 Pro
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The AKG K712 Pro is widely praised for its phenomenal soundstage and instrument separation, often described as having an 'ethereal' or 'magical' midrange. While it is considered a versatile all-rounder with surprisingly good bass extension for an open-back design, its reputation is tempered by recurring concerns regarding build quality—specifically the longevity of the elastic suspension system in the headband.
Pros
- Phenomenal, wide soundstage and excellent instrument separation
- High comfort levels due to soft headband and gel-filled earpads
- Strong bass extension for an open-back headphone
- Detailed and resolving treble response
- Unique 'ethereal' midrange quality
Cons
- Fragile elastic bands in the self-adjusting headband tend to lose tension or wither over time
- General build quality is frequently described as 'terrible' or lacking compared to the sound quality
- Potential for internal wiring issues (loose wires) after several years of use
Caveats
- Do not store these on traditional headphone stands that put tension on the strap, as this can quickly destroy the elastic suspension
- While sound quality is high, long-term durability is a common point of failure noted by owners
- May require a dedicated DAC/Amp to reach full potential due to power requirements
Best for
- Users prioritizing a massive soundstage for immersive listening
- Critical listening where instrument separation is key
- Long listening sessions where lightweight comfort is a priority
Avoid if
- You require 'tank-like' build quality or rugged durability
- You are unable or unwilling to perform minor repairs (like replacing elastics) over the product's lifespan
- You prefer a more 'raw' or aggressive sound signature over a smooth, wide one
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is based on 18 mentions with a median age of 292 days; while the sound profile remains a stable benchmark, the age of the data suggests users should verify if recent manufacturing batches have addressed known elastic durability issues.

What redditors said (10 of 18)
Obviously very similar, but better materials like the softer headband and gel earpads, more resolving and slightly more detail. That said it lacked a rawness the K702 had. ... However after four, or five years of ownership the K702 started to break down; a loose wire on one side and the elastic started to wither. So I sold the newer K712 before it too started to show signs of wear.
But if it suits you and your ears, it really is a uniquely brilliant sounding headphone.
Everyone should hear the K712 at some point in their headphone journey.
I can see myself switching between the DT 990 and the K712 since I do still love the sound of my 990s.
All the praise I’ve heard about this headphones is true, the soundstage is simply phenomenal.
Those are great for what you're doing, and also have nice low bass extension. I really like mine. ... Better soundstage than the Beyers, more lows than the R70XA, well balanced reproduction
Another one that might be in budget for you if you don't mind Open Box deals is the AKG K712 Pro. They're comfortable, nice sounding, great bass extension for an open back, great soundstage - a nice all-arounder.
Love mine - word of warning, don't store them on a traditional headphone stand. You will annhialate the elastics which are the weak point of the head strap.
Akg k712 pro , the best for wide soundstage and instrument separations, also amazing treble response
AKG K712 Pro ($100 less, which allows you to get a DAC because of the ohm)
