AKG K702
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The AKG K702 is a well-regarded open-back headphone celebrated for its exceptionally wide, "airy" soundstage and clear midrange. While it is frequently praised for its detail and "magical" presentation of genres like trance and acoustic music, it is widely noted for having a lean bass response and requiring significant amplification to reach its full potential. Users often compare it to the Sennheiser HD600, noting it offers a wider stage but a different, sometimes more clinical, tonal balance.
Pros
- Exceptionally wide and spacious soundstage
- Clear and detailed midrange performance
- Excellent instrument separation and imaging
- Lightweight and comfortable for long listening sessions
- High value for the price, often performing near more expensive 'mid-fi' staples
Cons
- Lean bass response that lacks impact for bass-heavy genres
- High power requirements; needs a dedicated amplifier to sound its best
- Soundstage can feel 'artificially wide' to some listeners
- Potential durability issues with specific internal parts over time
Caveats
- While they can reach audible volumes with basic dongles, users insist a strong amp is necessary for proper sound quality.
- Third-party replacement cables have been reported to cause channel imbalance or audio issues in some cases.
- The sound signature is more clinical and 'airy' than warm or bassy.
Best for
- Classical, acoustic, trance, and shoegaze music
- Users seeking maximum soundstage width on a budget
- Critical listening and studio monitoring
Avoid if
- You prefer a warm, bass-heavy sound signature
- You do not intend to use a dedicated headphone amplifier
- You primarily listen to metal or genres requiring high-impact low end

Feel free to check out... AKG K702
Feel free to check out the AKG K702 and the Audio-Technica ATH-R30X, for example.
take a look at the AKG K702 - some say that their soundstage is even too artificially wide. 🙂
I also recently received them used for 35 USD. The condition is still quite good, but cable is a tad too long for my use case. Ordered a cable from Amazon but I don't know why, the sound is off. Instruments come out okay, but vocals only come out from the left cup. Doesn't happen with the default cable.
Certainly a competent pair of headphones. I like how clear the mids on them. Nearing the performance of the legendary HD6000, but with wider soundstage.
The K702 was one of my all-time favourites only let down by the durability of certain parts.
for headphones you can check out sennheisers hd 560, Hifiman 400se, AKG K702, and Philips X2HR.
I used to recommend k702 a lot before TYGR 300 R came out
Am absolutely thrilled with this find. AKG K702, £55 off facebook. Like-new condition, sound staging is amazing.
Still - when I listened to music on the AKG K702 for the first time it was like a revelation. Music got a whole new dimension.
