AdGuard Home
Reddit take
Not enough linked mention summaries yet; the source excerpts below are the evidence.
Pros
- The alternative to running PiHole should be AdGuard Home, the self hosted solution and not the generic AdGuard DNS servers.
- Some things I run on my NAS I consider essential: AdGuard Home (used to run Pi-hole) for ad blocking
- Adguard Home.
- Internally all *.nas.lan records point to the NAS IP via DNS rewrites in AdGuard Home, which also runs DHCP.
- Use AdGuard Home with any DNS upstream you like. (better than Pihole imo)
Cons
- DIYing AdGuard Home or similar on an old computer hanging off the router
- Make it more customizable, add custom filter lists and I will ditch Adguard Home.

I use adguard home on a rpi5 and it’s been running great for the past year. Even blocks my Firestick updates with custom block list. I chose it over pihole because I wanted to run home assistant also on the pi. Very easy setup and maintain.
I use adguard home now running on my Nas and it's better as I can easily unblock sites.

I used to have Pi Hole but have since moved to AdGuard Home because it can run as a plugin to OPNsense.
Get a cheap mini pc with linux or rasberry pi with lineage os, run Adguard home/ pi hole.
