I'm an atheist and loved this book more than anything I've ever read. I actually had to start it multiple times before I read it all the way through, but I'm glad I stuck with it.
I'm an atheist as well. I don't think my lack of belief affected my enjoyment of the book.
I loved the language, the characters, the relationships, and I loved the way it all felt so random until it culminates so clearly and all feels so fated. But I am always delighted by John Irving. Atheist here. A true epic.

Read it several years ago and LOVED it. There are few books that make me ugly cry AND laugh as this one did.
