Feeling-wise, A House With Good Bones by T. Kingfisher is pretty good. The "ghosts" are definitely more weird than what was happening in The September House.

This book was a delight. The tone of the narrator, and the things that brought her joy (especially bugs), made me so happy. ... It was, overall, a great vibe and I enjoyed reading it.

The Twisted Ones and A House with Good Bones were both good, and did not have any animal death that I recall.
