AI summary — not a quote

Turkey is widely praised as a vibrant and safe destination offering a blend of modern amenities, rich history, and exceptional Mediterranean cuisine. While it remains a top pick for its hospitality and diverse landscapes, recent sentiment is increasingly colored by significant inflation and the implementation of dual-pricing systems where tourists pay higher rates than locals at major attractions.

Pros

  • Exceptional hospitality with locals described as warm, friendly, and respectful of personal space.
  • World-class food featuring diverse Mediterranean flavors and high-quality seafood.
  • Strong infrastructure for digital nomads, including specific tax incentives and high-quality private healthcare for foreigners.
  • Diverse travel experiences ranging from the vibrant urban life of Istanbul to the natural beauty of Fethiye and Cappadocia.

Cons

  • Rapidly rising costs due to high inflation, making it less of a budget destination than in previous years.
  • Widespread dual-pricing at tourist sites where foreigners are charged significantly more than residents.
  • Reports of sexual harassment, particularly noted in older or solo travel experiences.
  • The country's scale makes it difficult to experience more than one region in a short trip (e.g., under six days).

All i had to pay for was a $25 Turkish visa and got to spend 2 weeks traveling around turkey, meeting folks from across the globe. Unbelievable experience that changed me forever.

We had a similar experience in Turkey about 20 years ago, with a good helping of sexual harassment. Very stressful and upsetting.

I remember walking down a main street and realizing that the locals seemed to naturally just give people space as they passed, even if it was a packed area. And then I realized this was true during my entire time in Turkey (I also went to Cappadocia). The best part is that Turkish people are still warm and friendly, so it's not like they give you personal space but are cold and unapproachable. They know how to respect physical distance while being very nice and kind.

Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Turkey. My understanding is also that seafood doesn't need to be halal? Pretty much go anywhere in Asia lol.

Victoria Falls is spectacular (if you can spring for it, do a helicopter over the falls).
