AI summary — not a quote

The Montech Century II 850W is highly regarded in the PC building community as a top-tier value proposition, frequently cited as an 'A-tier' or 'A-rated' power supply that competes with premium brands at a lower price point. It is praised for its 80+ Gold efficiency, fully modular design, and 10-year warranty. However, while the sentiment is strongly positive, some users express hesitation due to the manufacturer's relatively short history in the high-end PSU market and isolated reports of quality control concerns.

Pros

  • Excellent value, often priced between $80 and $90 USD
  • Ranked as an A-tier or A-rated unit on popular community PSU tier lists
  • Fully modular design with 80+ Gold certification
  • Includes a 10-year warranty

Cons

  • Isolated reports of poor quality control and cable melting issues on non-12V-2x6 connectors
  • Manufacturer has a limited track record compared to established PSU brands
  • Long-term reliability is still unproven as the unit has only been on the market for a few years

AI summary — not a quote

An 850W power supply is widely regarded as the 'sweet spot' for high-end gaming builds, providing a balance of efficiency and headroom for modern components. It is frequently recommended for systems featuring RTX 4080 Super, 5070 Ti, or 5080 GPUs, as it handles transient power spikes better than 750W units while remaining more cost-effective than 1000W+ alternatives.

Pros

  • Provides sufficient headroom for high-end GPUs like the RTX 5080 and 4080 Super.
  • Often features two separate PCIe rails, which is preferable over daisy-chaining cables.
  • Minor price difference compared to 750W units while offering better future-proofing.
  • Operates near peak efficiency for many modern mid-to-high-end configurations.

Cons

  • May be insufficient or 'cutting it close' for flagship cards like the RTX 5090.
  • Efficiency loss means the unit can draw significantly more than 850W from the wall at max load.

For under £900 I managed to get an i7 14700, 32GB 5600MHz Dominator RAM, a Z790 Tomahawk MAG Mobo, Zotac 10GB RTX 3080 AMP Holo GPU, a new DarkFlash DY470 case and 6 case fans, and migrated my 2x 4TB M.2s, Corsair 360mm AIO and 850w Power supply from my old build into this.

I have 5080 and 9800x3d and an EVGA 850w PSU and it works great and uses less power than the previous 12700k and 14600k CPUs I had. As long as the PSU is considered A or S-tier, youre fine with that setup

PSU: Go 850W. 750W *technically* works (NVIDIA says minimum) but you're building a $2500 rig. The 4080 Super has transient spikes and having headroom means the fan stays quieter and you're covered for future upgrades . Seasonic Focus is great.

I paired the bundle with a 5070ti and an 850w psu. I feel super confident this set up will last me years, unless someone here tells me otherwise.
