A heat pump water heater will be more energy efficient in 100% of cases because physics is as of yet undefeated

Parent context: I would not get tankless or heat pump in the North East - they are not ready to deal with incoming water that is as cold as it will be in the winter. Give the technology some time to improve, but right now it's not there. Reply: mine works great in Maine for 3 years now

I’ve got a heat pump water heater in Massachusetts and it works great. It uses 2 KWH per day.

I set it only to use heat pump mode and it works fine.

I have one and love it, had it for 6 years, zero issues. On average it uses 775kwh each year in our 3 person household. Lives in the basement, dehumidifies the space somewhat.

For smaller size looks like faber is the one that is good.

And definitely do not go with an automatic burner, we had to scrap our 5yr old faber because apparently these models are not even repairable!

Better to go models that are not auto ignition and brands like faber or prestige. They cost almost the replacement price , cleaning is easy and the hob stays for two generations easily.
