It’s not a bad book, I don’t mind the writing style and I was looking forward to the plot. I started getting into reading the past couple of years and one thing I wanted to challenge myself was reading more mystery, thriller types of books but this one is very triggering

AI summary — not a quote

The Outsider is highly regarded by readers as a compelling hybrid of a grounded murder mystery and supernatural horror. While the first half is almost universally praised for its intense tension and procedural mystery, the second half's shift into paranormal territory and the eventual resolution are points of mild contention among fans.

Pros

  • Masterful tension and mystery in the first half of the book.
  • Highly recommended audiobook version.
  • Engaging, short chapters that maintain a fast pace despite the book's length.
  • Strong character work, particularly the inclusion of Holly Gibney.

Cons

  • The final confrontation and reveal are frequently described as underwhelming or 'sputtering' compared to the buildup.
  • The transition from a grounded mystery to a supernatural one may be jarring for some readers.
  • Typical of the author's style, some find the overall length slightly excessive.

Completely agree, the mystery was way more interesting than the reveal.
