The FiiO K7 is a well-regarded desktop DAC/Amp combo frequently recommended for its high power output and balanced connection capabilities. It is widely seen as a reliable 'all-in-one' solution for driving demanding headphones, offering a significant upgrade over standard motherboard audio. While the sentiment is overwhelmingly positive regarding its performance and build, some users suggest that for entry-level setups, the budget might be more effectively spent on higher-quality headphones before investing in a dedicated amp of this tier.

Pros

  • Ample power delivery suitable for high-impedance headphones like the HD600 series and DT 990 Pro.
  • Features a 4.4mm balanced output which provides a noticeable increase in volume and headroom.
  • Provides a full-range, 'saturated' sound that users find superior to standard PC jacks.
  • Solid build quality and generally reported as reliable and 'faultless' in long-term use.

Cons

  • Some users find the sound signature slightly 'dark' or 'flat' in the vocals when paired with specific headphones like the HD660.
  • The LED lighting may be distracting for some, though it can be managed via firmware updates.

I can only go with mine and my friends and family, who have all agreed that the DAC/amp was clearly superior (at the time, a cheap K7, btw...real snake oil, that).

A week later I picked up a K7 and was shocked at how much better it sounded than just using the jack. I've moved on from the K7, but the combo of full-range DAC and adequate amp power go a long way to improving even already "good" sound from the headphone jack.

However, if you spend a bit (Fosi K7 or FiiO K11 R2R), you'll get two major upgrades: 1. Most computers don't have full-range DACs, and either of those will give you a solid, full-range DAC

You could also sell your K5 Pro and take a look if you perhaps could grab a used K7 to keep the upgrade truly cheap.

FiiO K7 appears to be the least powerful, but at that level it really shouldn't make any difference for DT990 250Ohm, and K7 does have 4.4mm balanced output capable of 13Vrms if you would ever have a super demanding headphone requiring so much

The FiiO K13 is a well-received all-in-one desktop DAC/Amp, frequently highlighted for its R2R architecture which users describe as offering a warmer, musical character compared to standard delta-sigma designs. It is positioned as a feature-rich upgrade over the K11, providing significant power output, Bluetooth connectivity, and integrated Parametric EQ (PEQ) capabilities.

Pros

  • R2R DAC implementation provides a warmer sound with good resolution
  • High power output suitable for demanding planar headphones
  • Includes Parametric EQ (PEQ) and remote control functionality
  • Excellent value for the price, especially when compared to older stacks

Cons

  • The official FiiO mobile app is reported to be notoriously poor and buggy

I got a used HE1000se a few months ago and just got the Fiio K13 as my first device with an R2R DAC. It's about what I expected so I am definitely very happy for the price.

The K13 has so many great features. Protip: the app is notoriously poor, but there's a lesser-known [browser-based version of Fiio Control](https://fiiocontrol.fiio.com) you can use to set up all your PEQ presets. It's a drastically improved user experience over the mobile version, imo.

I have a k13 and some FT1, I would say yes to this mainly because most sound cards are unlikely to compete with any decent external amp. I love my k13 but wonder if a slightly brighter dac/ amp might suit the FT1 better?
