AI summary — not a quote
Essaouira is highly regarded as a laid-back coastal alternative to the hustle of Marrakech, frequently praised for its Atlantic breeze, blue-and-white medina, and fresh seafood. While some visitors note it has become increasingly tourist-heavy with occasional street congestion, it remains a top recommendation for its cooler temperatures, scenic ramparts, and relaxed pace of life.
Pros
- Laid-back, relaxed atmosphere compared to larger Moroccan cities
- Fresh grilled seafood, particularly sardines, available at the port
- Scenic ramparts and medina with views of the Atlantic
- Excellent conditions for water sports like kite and windsurfing
Cons
- Increasingly tourist-focused and can feel 'mobbed' in peak areas
- Narrow medina streets can experience human traffic bottle-necks
- Limited traditional 'sights' for those who prefer structured activities over wandering

I’d recommend flying in, and first thing next morning getting a bus inland to chefchaouen (for the mountains and hash, I guess) or essaouira (for the sea…and the hash, I guess).
A train then bus took us to the seaside at Essaouira with its beaches where camel and horse rides are available for hire. We spent a lot of time hanging out in the Medina and especially on the ramparts which look over the Atlantic.
I liked Tangier a lot, and I *really* loved Essaouira. If you get a chance to go back, that’s a place that should be visited.
Luckily, I’m leaving the city tomorrow. I’m heading to Essaouira, which I hope will be kinder to me haha.
Was in Marrakesh and Essaouira for a week back in 2023 and there's nowhere else like them.
