BYD is recognized as a dominant global force in the EV market, particularly praised for its aggressive pricing and manufacturing efficiency. While frequently compared to Tesla, Reddit users often view BYD as a high-value alternative that prioritizes practical features like physical indicator stalks and dual screens. However, opinions are mixed regarding its long-term reliability and interior quality, with some users describing the brand as the 'Nissan of China'—functional and affordable but lacking the polish of premium competitors.

Pros

  • Excellent value for money with aggressive pricing often under $28k USD in some markets
  • Strong battery performance and range retention even after high mileage (70k+ miles)
  • Inclusion of physical driver controls like indicator stalks and dual screens
  • High manufacturing efficiency and vertical integration allowing for lower consumer costs

Cons

  • Software interface is often described as unpolished or having a cheap 'Android tablet' feel
  • Interior materials and build quality can feel budget-oriented upon closer inspection
  • Conservative charging curves compared to some competitors
  • Reported issues with CarPlay integration and software polish

If I'm BYD, it'll be hard for me to justify investing in a 3 billion US manufacturing plant that might get shut down without warning.

Generally BYD is considered sort of like a Nissan of China — they sell cars for cheap, compromise on reliability and quality, but usually not disastrously so.

Acura is widely regarded as a reliable, performance-oriented luxury brand that serves as a more premium version of Honda. It is frequently recommended for drivers who want a Japanese car with a more engaging, "German-like" road feel and better standard features than Lexus, though it is often viewed as slightly less prestigious and potentially less reliable than its Toyota-owned rival.

Pros

  • Strong reliability rooted in Honda engineering
  • Superior handling and road feel, particularly models equipped with SH-AWD
  • Often comes 'loaded' with standard features that are optional on competitors
  • High depreciation makes them excellent values on the used market

Cons

  • Interior materials and 'flashiness' may not feel as premium as Lexus
  • Perception among some long-term owners that newer models are less robust than classic versions
  • Body panels reported to dent easily on some top-tier models
  • Higher insurance rates and maintenance costs compared to base Honda models

At a $2k–$2.5k budget, stay away from the Acura badges. You’ll mostly find beat-up luxury cars with hidden electrical issues and expensive parts.

I do not understand the hype of acuras, compare one side by side with a Honda and they use the exact same panels, plastic, parts.

I bought an Acura recently and it took them over 3 hrs to close the deal. I used the Costco buying service, promotional financing, and had no trade. There was zero negotiation. Just picked a car. So the dealer was physically nicer than your average Honda place but the experience was still frustrating.
