Have you thought about the BMW 330i? They're reliable, sporty, and Car and Driver got 42 mpg at 75 mph in the rear-wheel drive one.

330i is good too, I have a 2023 model but it’s more of a sporty chassis and on the stiffer side with the M adaptive suspension.

the b48 in the newer 330i is actually pretty solid, that friend of yours is probably working off 2008-era bmw stereotypes

330i is extremely reliable. Preferably use a non dealer for maintenance. Excellent fuel economy too. And a great driving experience.

AI summary — not a quote

The Volkswagen GTI is widely regarded by Reddit users as the quintessential 'fun daily' driver, praised for its ability to transition from a practical highway cruiser to an engaging 'go-kart' on demand. While it is celebrated for its refined EA888 engine platform and high-quality hatchback interior, opinions are mixed regarding its long-term cost of ownership. While some owners report high reliability, others warn that maintenance is more expensive than economy competitors and that the used market is heavily saturated with modified or poorly treated examples.

Pros

  • Excellent balance of daily practicality and sporty driving dynamics.
  • Refined EA888 engine platform with over a decade of development.
  • High-quality interior and features, particularly in the SE and Autobahn trims.
  • Versatile hatchback form factor that serves as an effective 'one-car solution.'

Cons

  • Routine maintenance is more expensive than 'frugal' competitors like Honda or Toyota.
  • Difficult to find used examples under $20,000 that haven't been tuned or driven aggressively.
  • Infotainment system in certain models is described as unattractive or difficult to use.
  • Lacks the all-wheel drive and rear differential found in the higher-tier Golf R.

Whilst not RWD, the GLI and GTI are tons of fun.

Between the two, I'd get a Golf GTI

Get a GTI. You won't be disappointed. Just make sure to get a proper PPI done before purchasing the car.

If you’re looking for a fun, nimble, and sporty drive with a decent exhaust note then I think the GTI is the answer. Running costs are certainly higher than a Lexus IS. The dual clutch while more or less solid can be a little bit of a pain to drive in heat and stop and go traffic.
