AI summary — not a quote

The BenQ W1070 is widely regarded as a legendary "workhorse" in the projector community, praised for its exceptional longevity and image quality that remains competitive with modern budget 1080p units. Despite being a decade-old model, it is frequently recommended as a superior used purchase compared to new, low-cost projectors due to its reliability and sharp picture.

Pros

  • Exceptional durability with many users reporting over 10 years of consistent use
  • Sharp 1080p image quality that users claim outperforms many modern budget alternatives
  • Low input latency (sub-30ms), making it a viable option for gaming
  • Strong contrast levels and support for 3D frame packing

Cons

  • DMD chip failure (appearing as white or black dots) is a known issue after very high mileage
  • Limited to 1080p resolution, which may feel dated for those specifically seeking 4K
  • Requires periodic bulb replacements to maintain brightness over its long lifespan

A used Optoma/BenQ/Epson shits on any new 1080p projector at this price range and it's not even close. ) vs vs BenQ W1070 (less than $200)

It replaced my W1070 and since I couldn't run wires in the ceiling, this was a good choice. It is super quiet and I hope it lasts near as long as the W1070.

A 50” Panasonic plasma and a BenQ W1070 projector with a 96” pull-down screen directly in front of the TV. Works out well.

AI summary — not a quote

The XGIMI Horizon 20 is widely considered a high-value tri-laser projector, frequently praised for its exceptional brightness, sharpness, and the inclusion of premium hardware features like optical zoom and lens shift at a competitive price point. While it is a strong contender for gaming and bright-room use, users have reported significant issues with its DynamicBlack implementation and mixed results regarding color accuracy out of the box.

Pros

  • High brightness levels suitable for rooms that aren't fully darkened
  • Excellent image sharpness and effective AI-driven upscaling (AISR)
  • Includes optical zoom and lens shift, which are rare at this price point for DLP projectors
  • Strong gaming features including low latency, 120Hz support at 1080p, and VRR

Cons

  • DynamicBlack (EBL) feature is described as unusable or poorly implemented
  • Reports of inconsistent color accuracy, specifically pushing blue or red tones
  • Susceptible to tri-laser artifacts such as speckle, metamerism, and rainbow effect (RBE)
  • Customer service is limited to email, which can be frustrating for defective units

it's worth mentioning that the horizon 20 series is a terrible value in Canada (for some reason). The base horizon 20 is 3200 in cad. Max is 4500.

Don't get portable one if you don't need it. The horizon 20 will easily be 2x brighter.
