Winix 5500-2
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Winix 5500-2 is widely regarded as a 'default' recommendation on Reddit for its balance of high performance and long-term value. It is particularly noted for its robust carbon pellet filter, which users find superior to thin carbon sheets for neutralizing smoke and odors. While praised for its durability and washable filters that lower maintenance costs, it is frequently criticized for its bright LED indicators and the controversial 'PlasmaWave' ionizer technology, which some users disable due to concerns about ozone or pet safety.
Pros
- Washable pre-filter and carbon filter significantly reduce the frequency and cost of replacements.
- Utilizes real carbon pellets, making it highly effective for odors and smoke compared to competitors.
- High Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) makes it suitable for larger rooms and high air turnover.
- Quiet operation on low settings and includes a dedicated night mode for sleeping.
- Proven, robust design that many users find more reliable than newer 'smart' alternatives.
Cons
- Bright air quality indicator lights can be disruptive in bedrooms and cannot be easily dimmed.
- The 'smart' sensor is often reported as insensitive, failing to ramp up fan speeds unless smoke is very close.
- PlasmaWave technology is a point of concern for users with sensitive pets (especially birds or cats).
- High power draw on turbo mode (60-70w) compared to lower settings (~14w).
- Potential for main board failure after several years with limited options for official repairs.
Caveats
- The PlasmaWave feature can be manually toggled off, and some users choose to physically disconnect it for peace of mind.
- There are conflicting reports regarding the model's availability, with some users suggesting it is being discontinued in favor of the 5510.
- A user noted a past class action lawsuit regarding the 'True HEPA' marketing claims for this model.
Best for
- Pet owners dealing with hair and dander.
- Smokers or those needing to eliminate strong household odors.
- Budget-conscious buyers looking for low long-term maintenance costs.
Avoid if
- You are highly sensitive to light while sleeping.
- You have birds or other pets sensitive to ionizers and do not want to manage the PlasmaWave setting.
- You require modern app connectivity or integrated smart home features.
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is drawn from a window with a median age of 287 days, which is relatively recent for a stable hardware product, though some users mention the model may be aging out of the market.

OP if you get this do *not* use the plasma feature - it’s toxic to cats!
I got Winix 5500-2 for my cat. Main feature you want is true HEPA filter
5500-2 is hard to come by now that its pretty much discontinued in north america, but this is a good model.
This isn't a hard recommendation, mostly because its discontinued, but I use Winix 5500-2's. The filters on the 5500-2 have some success fitting in other models in varying degrees (from drop in compatible through mild modification/loss of pre filter). They use a plastic honeycomb shaped holder to carry pellet shaped carbon. It smells great for a few days, and that crisp carbon smell fades after about a week.
Air purifier can help if you have something like a Winix 5500-2 in each room running at max speed it will remove the smell quickly. The charcoal filters are washable 2-3 times.
5500-2 = Thinner HEPA filter in exchange for more room to fit a honeycomb filter carrying activated carbon pellets. This replaces the carbon plastic sheet on the 5300-2 / C535. ... I use the 5500-2 filter stack inside of the C535 and 5300-2 as it has increased activated carbon.
C535 and 5500-2 100%. To be honest I would assume it's all the models with that similar shape design. [referring to needing to replace motor bearings because they get loud]
A few things I didn’t like: * PlasmaWave is enabled by default, though it can be turned off. * The carbon filter is better for everyday odors than heavy smoke or VOCs. * It gets noticeably louder on higher fan speeds.
Out of everything mentioned, the Winix 5500-2 stood out mainly because: * True HEPA, carbon filter, and pre-filter cover dust, allergens, pet hair, and odors. * Clear filter specs and replacement schedule. * Replacement filters are easy to find. * Includes auto mode, an air quality sensor, and manual fan controls.
Winix and coway also make good units I’ve had a 5500-2 for like 6+ years now and it’s had no issues.
