WD Gold

Pros

• I would opt for a NAS drive or a Enterprise drive. WD Red, Gold, HGST drives, Seagate Iron Wolf / Pro or Exos. Yes they cost more but are better optimised and I think should be better for the long run when running 24/7.
• WD DC Ultrastar drives have better reputation that Gold, but Gold is good too.
• For that price, you should look into used enterprise drives (like HGST or WD Gold). They are way more reliable than old Pipeline drives.
• Would refurbished enterprise drives (like HGST or WD Gold) be a smarter move?
• Enterprise drives (Seagate Exos, WD Gold and Ultrastar). these are the *really* good ones, meant for use in commercial servers. designed for very heavy workloads.

Cons

• you should really stay away from WD Gold and other enterprise graded drives because those things are extremely loud.
• Every now and then my Areca card throws up some error on my golds, but never for my ultra’s.
• Gold drives don't seem to receive firmware updates or very rarely. You just put it in a server and forget about it for 5 years.
• I recently purchased a WD Gold, only for it to be DoA. I've always used Golds, but ever since receiving a DoA drive, I'm now considering the Ultrastar series.
• I’d also look at Seagate Exos, WD gold/HGST and Toshiba MG as the enterprise drives are sometimes cheaper.
