Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Toyota Fortuner is a highly polarizing SUV, praised for its 'bulletproof' reliability and off-road capability while being frequently criticized for its lack of comfort and utilitarian interior. Based on the Hilux platform, it is viewed as a smart financial decision due to its strong resale value and low maintenance costs, though many users find the ride quality too stiff for daily commuting.

Pros

  • Exceptional long-term durability and mechanical reliability.
  • Strong resale value and low maintenance costs due to shared parts with the Hilux.
  • Capable off-road performance, especially in sandy terrain.
  • The V6 4.0L variant is noted for being reliable and capable on long highway trips.

Cons

  • Stiff ride quality and poor comfort, with some users comparing the experience to driving a bus.
  • Interior materials are often described as dull, cheap, or basic.
  • Extremely cramped third-row seating, described as unsuitable for adults.
  • Heavy steering and a lack of modern advanced features in lower trims.

Caveats

  • Opinions on comfort are sharply divided; some owners find it acceptable for daily use while others find it 'trashy' for long commutes.
  • Fuel economy is a noted concern, particularly for the 2.7L base model which may feel underpowered.
  • Budget-conscious buyers often compare it to the Mitsubishi Pajero, which some find to offer better features for the price.

Best for

  • Off-roading and sand driving.
  • Buyers prioritizing long-term ownership and high resale value.
  • Users in regions where spare parts and easy maintenance are a priority.

Avoid if

  • You prioritize a plush, comfortable ride for city driving.
  • You regularly require a functional third row for passengers with legs.
  • You want a modern, high-tech interior or premium cabin materials.

There are better options for... durability and reliability (Fortuner, Land Cruiser, Pilot, GMC Sierra, F150).

Go for a used Prado or a Fortuner. It won't loose value. The car is very cheap to maintain, it is comfortable and has its own stature. It is a smart financial decision to purchase a Toyota 4x4.

Have been looking into the obvious options (Fortuner, Pajero) and have been seeing mixed reviews about driving comfort online for these two models, aswell as cheap interior bits.

Had a Fortuner before from 2016 - 2019….family did not like it one bit. Said it was too trashy of a vehicle. And the 3rd row of seats was good enough for people with no legs. Want to torture someone, throw them in the 3rd row of a fortuner.
