Consider the fj cruiser, little bigger but great with some mods
But if you want to get a serious offroading base, that budget gets you (easily) fully built low mileage FJ cruiser from Japan - it takes little effort to get it, but it will be in much better shape than 99% of FJ Cruisers sold locally and will outlast you and your kids.
If fuel economy is not a problem, you could also buy a used FJ cruiser or prado from say 16-18 which (if clean & there's quite a few around).
The FJ Cruiser I bought 6 months ago. Fun to drive and supremely reliable
The FJ is a workhorse but not recommended for family due to the doors
