AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Reddening is a polarizing folk horror novel by Adam Nevill that is frequently debated for its dense prose and slow-burn pacing. While many readers praise its immersive atmosphere and deep dive into fictional occult lore, a significant number of others find it to be a "slog" with repetitive descriptions and a predictable plot that relies on cult horror clichés.

Pros

  • Immersive atmosphere and impressive landscape descriptions
  • Deep dive into fictional occult lore
  • Strong appeal for fans of folk horror and cult-themed stories
  • Highly regarded by some as a standout in Adam Nevill's bibliography

Cons

  • Pacing is often described as a "slog" or excessively slow
  • Protagonists can feel unengaging or "boring" to some readers
  • Overly long descriptive passages that some feel should have been trimmed
  • Perceived as predictable or reliant on traditional cult horror tropes

Caveats

  • Readers frequently report DNFing (did not finish) the book due to its long setup and slow start
  • The writing style is noted as divisive, even among established fans of the author's other works

Best for

  • Fans of slow-burn folk horror
  • Readers who enjoy detailed world-building and occult lore
  • Followers of Adam Nevill's work such as The Ritual or Last Days

Avoid if

  • You prefer fast-paced horror or tight plotting
  • You are easily frustrated by lengthy descriptive passages
  • You want a story that subverts traditional cult horror tropes

if you want an actual deep dive into occult lore (fictional, albeit) go with Last Days or even more so, The Reddening. The Reddening has a pretty long set up.

I tried The Reddening by Nevill, and had to DNF because I found it too campy and just generally too long/slow.

Parent context: The Reddening & Cunning Folk are my two favorites! Reply: This is the one that I really liked! This and The Ritual. Oddly, I didn't really care for Last Days so much.

It was a pretty stark departure from his (very divisive) style that I had enjoyed so much with Last Days and The Reddening

It was basically a 200-250 page novella that was stretched to 400 pages. There are long sections of describing the setting that could’ve been greatly trimmed down. It was also unbelievably predictable. Like every cliche you can think of on horror stories about cults was somehow fit into it.
