Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Smart Air is recognized on Reddit as a mission-driven B-corp that focuses on simple, effective particulate filtration. Users frequently recommend the brand for its straightforward design—often featuring only basic power and speed settings—and its reputation for quiet, affordable performance. While highly regarded for removing dust and allergens, the brand is consistently grouped with other consumer purifiers that lack sufficient activated carbon to effectively manage odors, gases, or VOCs.

Pros

  • Simple, no-frills design (on/off and speed settings)
  • Mission-driven B-corp status is viewed positively by the community
  • Effective for particulate and HEPA-level filtration
  • Generally quiet operation even in larger models
  • Affordable compared to some high-end consumer brands

Cons

  • Insufficient activated carbon weight for effective odor or VOC removal
  • Lacks advanced sensors or "smart" features found in competitors

Caveats

  • Like most HEPA brands, the manufacturer recommends against exposing filter media to UV/sunlight to avoid damage
  • The brand is primarily optimized for particulates rather than chemical vapors

Best for

  • Users seeking a simple, durable air purifier without complex apps or sensors
  • Large spaces requiring quiet particulate filtration
  • Budget-conscious buyers looking for a reputable alternative to generic brands

Avoid if

  • Your primary goal is removing heavy odors, smoke smells, or VOCs
  • You require integrated air quality sensors or automated 'smart' modes

Blueair—alongside brands like Coway, Winix, Philips, Medify Air, Smart Air, Levoit, Honeywell, and similar—have very little activated carbon by weight.

If you wanted to upgrade from the regular consumer brands, I’d look into smart air.

Unfortunately most purifier brands (ex: Winix, Coway, Blueair, Levoit, Philips, Honeywell, Smart Air, Medify Air, etc.) have very little activated carbon or other sorbent media by weight for gases/vapors/odors/VOCs.

I contacted Blueair, Coway, Winix, Levoit, Smart Air, and Medify Air about this. All of them recommended against placing their HEPA filters (or HEPA-like as the case may be for Levoit) in the sun because UV rays can damage the filter media.

It's a mission driven company that is also a B-corp (they commit to people and planet alongside profits). That's a good thing.

I would recommend the Smart Air generally, such as the blast mini or blast that powersqaud suggested.

I just have a fondness for them since they got me started with cheap DIY HEPA and N95s 10+ years ago.

As for odors and a "fresh" smelling home, most common purifier brands have very little activated carbon or other sorbent media for gases/vapors/odors. This includes the two Winix models in addition to brands like Levoit, Coway, Medify Air, Smart Air, Honeywell, etc.

But Smart Air has a good reputation.

You may want to consider Cuckoo, IQAir, Smart Air, Winix, or Philips.
