This option is fantastic, because to get around we had to take a scooter (be aware that being used to riding scooters in France is not the same as in Indonesia). It allowed us to stay in places "untouched" by tourism, to see a more unique side of Indonesia, and to ride through the mountains on roads devoid of cars, seeing rice paddies that aren't mentioned in any guidebooks but are just as beautiful (in my opinion, even more so).

My IDP says the weight of the scooter and sidecar, not displacement of the engine or speed. But you're absolutely right, you wouldn't be covered insurance wise.
I’d be a bit cautious doing long distances there as a beginner. Roads are very mixed. Around bigger towns like Maumere they’re okay, but once you go more remote (especially towards Larantuka and Lembata), you’ll find: - narrow roads - potholes - steep and winding mountain sections - occasional gravel or broken asphalt
Of course the scooter gives the most freedom and has a certain charm but I know the reality of riding a scooter for the better part of a day on windy, underdeveloped roads is most likely quite brutal at times.
If whitout experience. It will be tricky/dangerous. Scooter speeds at 80-100km/h are not for starters.
Roads were better then expected. Had luck a few times with some craters in the road. Other than that peace, safety and got to and meeting all kinds of folks doing the same. Loved it.
But yeah without a lesson like that, I recommend to not use a scooter. It is easy to crash if you have no idea what you're doing, end up in hospital in very rural indonesia, potentially a very bad time.
If you are an experienced scooter driver, I think it's a good way to go.
