Of 2025 new releases, I loved the covers of Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng by Kylie Lee Baker and rekt by Alex Gonzalez.
I read 120 pages in one sitting. I finished the book this evening. I never do that! ... what I loved about Rekt was the casual relationship the narrator had with the reader. The tone reminded me a lot of the main character from Damned and Doomed from Palahniuk. I loved how graphic it was. It was dark and poignant and still had elements of humor.
A recent one for me is Alex Gonzalez’s >rekt*. I knew it would be intense going on but the degree of intensity and violence was still surprising.
I read this a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. I wasn't quite sure all the elements made sense (AI reconstructions of proposed deaths etc and the omniprescent Mods being like Black Ops ), but Alex was a great antihero idiot protagonist and the online depravity was well executed. Writing and dialogue was a cut above most too. Well worth a read.

Parent context: I also literally just finished this an hour ago. I had never heard of the book or the author, but this came in a horror book box I subscribe to a couple months ago so I gave it a go. And WHOAH it was so good. 5/5 stars for me as well. Sammy was an interesting character... pretty horrible, but I could totally see how his experiences made him the way he was so I had sympathy. The bits at the end … Reply: I also had never heard of either but it was recommended to me on my kindle. I grew really attached to sammy in a weird way… like he’s awful but reading from his perspective I started to feel for him and hoped ray would lighten up 😭 i completely agree about the bits at the end!!! Sealed the deal!
The premise was super interesting to me and it delivered more than I expected! Also pleasantly surprised! Definitely stirred up middle school internet trauma😭
